What is Natrelax?

Natrelax is a natural, safe, phenolphthalein-free laxative made from the dried bitter fraction of the South African Cape Aloes plant (Aloe ferox) combined with a mineral, magnesium sulphate. Natrelax has a triple action of increasing gut motility (peristalsis), softening the stool (intestinal osmotic effect) and lubricating movement.

What is Natrelax used for?

Natrelax is used for the short-term relief of moderate to severe constipation.

Who will benefit from Natrelax?

Natrelax will offer effective relief to adults and older children with moderate to severe constipation. Natrelax will help where other less effective laxatives have failed.

How does Natrelax work?

Natrelax treats constipation in three ways by:

• stimulating bowel motion: The Aloe ferox plant extract increases the movement of the bowel (peristalsis): The active constituent of the cape aloe plant is called Aloin (an anthraquinone glycoside). Aloin is split by the normal bacteria in the large intestines to form another molecule called aloe-emodinanthrone (an aglycone), which exerts the laxative effect. Aloe increases motility and secretions of the colon and therefore increases propulsion and reduces transit time. It also causes fluids to be secreted into the bowel, helping to softening the stool.
• softening the stool: Magnesium sulphate (a mineral) has an osmotic laxative effect. This is because magnesium sulphate cannot be absorbed into the body and remains in the gut. The result is that water is pumped into the bowel to dilute the magnesium sulphate (through osmosis). This water softens the stool.
• lubricating motion: Stool motion is lubricated by the increased mucous secretions caused by the aloe. This results in pain-free ease of motion.

The laxative effect of Natrelax is usually noticed within 8-10 hours.

Is Natrelax safe?

Yes, Natrelax contains only natural plant and mineral ingredients. The ingredients in Natrelax have been proven to be safe in clinical trials. Since it is possible to develop a lazy-gut syndrome with the continuous use or abuse of laxatives, Natrelax should not be used for longer than 10 days continuously, and the recommended dose should not be exceeded.

Does Natrelax contain the cancer-causing ingredient, Phenolphthalein?

No! There is no phenolphthalein in Natrelax. Phenolphthalein is a laxative that can cause cancer and skin damage. The Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa (PSSA) and the Department of Health (DOH) have recommended that all phenolphthalein containing laxatives be removed from South African shelves (Government Gazette #23343/2002 and PSSA newsletter #19/2002).

The Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) in the USA banned phenolphthalein containing products in 1997.

The ingredients in Natrelax were tested by Department of Medicine, University of Erlangen, Germany and proven not to cause cancer. These results were published in the British Medical Journal in 2000.

Will I notice an immediate effect?

Natrelax takes approximately 8-10 hours for its laxative effect to be noticed.

What is the dosage of Natrelax?

Adults and children over 12 years should start on one tablet daily. This can be increased to 1 tablet twice a day if no relief is obtained after 10-12 hours.

Children over 6 year can take a maximum of one tablet daily.

Children under 6 years of age should not take Natrelax.

Are there any side-effects?

Natrelax can occasionally result in abdominal pain and cramps. Long-term use, abuse or high doses can cause diarrhea. Long-term use or abuse can result in kidney inflammation, potassium depletion, blood in the urine, muscle weakness, weight loss and irregular heartbeat due to electrolyte loss.
